A more sustainable, durable future is looking likely
Members of Eurpean Parliament want to help consumers to be able to make more informed decisions over environmentally friendly goods and to help companies offer these types of products, as well as improve the durability of their product offering. It is believed that unsubstantiated environmental claims should be banned, limiting product durability by design should not be allowed, and a product should function well with spare parts and consumables from a different manufacturer to the original.
With a resounding 544 votes to 18 alongside 17 abstentions, plenary approved the proposal for a new directive on enabling and empowering consumers for this upcoming green transition. As a result of this vote, consumers will be more knowledgeable about the products that they're buying and less likely to deceived by green washing, while companies will be encouraged to offer more durable and sustainable products!
No More Lies!
The approved negotiating mandate foresees banning the use of general environmental claims, such as "environmentally friendly", "natural", "biogedradable", "climate-neutral", or "eco" if detailed factual evidence isn't provided to substantiate these claims. Environmental claims that are based soley on carbon offsetting schemes will also be banned and other misleading claims such as implying that an entire product is environmentally friendly or "green" when only part of it is.
In order to implement these new laws, MEPs envision sustainability labels which will be allowed based on official certification schemes or established by public authorities.
As a green enthusiast and legitimate remanufacturer/recycler, these changes are fantastic news for us and our industry. For too long now, others within the remanufacturing industry have been hiding behind the success of the remanufactured brand when they themselves aren't legitimate remanufacturers, using simply the name/term "remanufactured" to improve the image and demand for their products, however, if these new legislations and implementations are successful, this will no longer be possible.
